Female wisdom

Nagi Gompa nunnery hermitage sits on a mountainside high above the Kathmandu Valley and is home to more than 100 nuns associated with Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery in Kathmandu. It is one of the few places where the old female Buddhist tradition is practiced and passed on in an authentic way. The nuns live partly on home-grown vegetables and fruits. While the everyday life is simple and hard, they put most efforts into studying and meditating. These photos were taken before the devastating earthquake in 2015. Many buildings suffered extensive damage and must be rebuilt.
